We are on the cusp of 2013, and whilst there are many things that are always unsure, one of the things that seems certain is that we will have a national election in 2013.
The current parliament was was elected on the 21st of August 2010 and sat for the first time on the 28th September 2010. This means that teh current parliament will expire on the 27th of September 2013. The last day on which writs could be issued in that case would be the 7th of October 2013. That would mean the election would be between 9th and the 30th of November 2013. Usual practice, not that that means much these days would see the issue of the writs some time before the expiry of the parliament.
The Half Senate election will be between the 3rd of August and the 30th of November and contemporary practice would be for the two elections to be held concurrently.
The 5th of October is the most unlikely date as this will be the festival of football in two codes, so an election would have trouble making it to the front page.
