Consistency

Before last year’s election,  Tony Abbott  said that the Coalition’s objectives were to end the waste, repay the debt, stop the big new taxes and stop the boats.

He is still singing the same song, and his Economic Speech this week to the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce underlined this theme and the consistency of the message over the period of 18 months.

Wayne Swan who has been anointed the ‘world’s best treasurer’ sounds like he wants to bet the budget back in surplus, however he has not delivered one yet, and one wonders if he will. It seems the Labor response to spend in any crisis has not changed.

Returning the budget to surplus is the prerequisite required for repaying debt, so that is down the tube for the moment as well.

Stop big new taxes reminds us cruelly fo Julias promise that there would be no carbon tax under a government she lead. Most of us see a slight lack of consistency in the position now as the bill is before the house.

That leaves the last item, and despite Julia’s endless promise to deliver a solution. The boats have continued to arrive at a great pace and victory for Julia now seems to be getting things through Cabinet, because getting things through the house is just way too illusive at the moment. To be fair he friends in power the Greens are dead opposed to any form of offshore processing. Julia seems to believe that Tony therefore should give her the nod for exactly what she wants.

Tony has taken the Julia position. She dismissed Nauru as they were not a signatory tot he refugee convention, and went for Malaysia as they we not a signatory tot he refugee convention. Nauru is now a signatory, so by Julia’s criteria Nauru is now a better option. He problem with it seems to be that John Howard did it and Tony Abbott has suggested it.

Before last year’s election,  Tony Abbott  said that the Coalition’s objectives were to end the waste, repay the debt, stop the big new taxes and stop the boats.

Today we have a Gilalrd Led Governemnt and ostensiubly we have more waste, more debt, more taxes, and more boats.

Whilst there are numbers of issues that concern me about the Abbott position, I suspect he is consistent and determined to deliver on these promises. Would he have been able to deliver such changes? The question of course is academic.
